A Review of a So Called Bad Movie: "KAW"

What’s not scarier than a horde/herd of something coming for your flesh!! Imagine hundreds of cockroaches running up your body or millions of rats chewing at your legs!! It works! It is a scary idea and the master of suspense himself, Alfred Hitchcock, showed that the feathery flyer of the sky could come across as terrifying, but it does not always seem to work. Even with a terrifying bird like the Raven.

Kaw has a great title, and when a friend told me about this film the title was one of the biggest draws. They could have gone with “The Ravens” or even “The Birds”, but no they did the right thing and had a bit of fun with the title. I should have known that that is where the movie stopped being any good!

OK, I will say that I was never bored during the film, but about halfway through it felt a little labored. The film seemed to miss a little something extra to keep the story from dragging. Not to say that the plot was not any good because that is the thing that surprised me the most about the production. The story was quite interesting, silly and a bit stupid, but how often are these types of films not a little weird in ways of plot. It’s about a group of birds that seem to have the knowledge of a human and have a taste for flesh. I will not give too much away just in case you decide to rent this film. What I will say is that up to a point you can go along with birds just turning and attacking. Even to a point where they know who the weaker people to pick off are, that’s if the fact about a Raven being as clever as a dog is true. But then how they attack the school bus near the end of the picture, is saying that they are as clever as a human being. This all seems a bit far fetched, especially when you find out what made them so clever!! So if it was not the story what made the film seem labored I think it could have been either the acting or the small silly plot holes.
The acting was not over the top or even that wooden, it was more the fact that no real emotion had gone into it. Take for example a scene where the ravens manage to make a car steer off the road and crash, which should create a tense amount of fear over the fact that birds have that power. But no, that is played down by the actors, who decide to show they are scared but not as much as they should be. This is a feeling pasted around by all the cast, each and every one of them not really caring about the character they should be playing. It got to a point where I started to forget who was alive and not care who is getting killed, at one point I even lost the plot as to if a character was left in a vehicle alive or dead and unless I watch the film again I will never know or even care!!

Throughout the film there seemed to be a lack of care in the film making process. I’m not saying that the camera was out of focus or the boom kept falling into shot, no I’m talking more of lazy props and continuity. I didn't really start to notice this until about 20 minutes into the film, when the police office goes to checkout a crime scene and somehow cuts his hand on the blunt edge of the table. From then on I picked up a few other bits, like for example that the snow seemed to be appearing and disappearing whenever it felt like it! But the Amish were the worse culprit of them all. I first noticed the beards, and how fake they looked, like they were hooked round the ears like fake Santa beards. The other thing that got to me about them was the fact that they were cross about relying on the English (meaning Americans) too much, but they seemed happy enough to drive around in cars and wear clothes provided by the Americans!!

I also want to put a bit of focus on the stars of the film, the birds themselves. Ravens are pretty terrifying animals without any help but with the added fake blood on the beaks they looked even more scary. What you have to remember though is the golden rule of cinema “Never work with children or animals”, and in this film you can kind of see why this comment is needed. It must really be quite hard to control a group of massive birds and that is quite clear in quite a few scenes in the film. Most noticeable are scenes which include birds looking the wrong way and even at one point, a bird seems to come on to the set to early, even turning around and leaving before coming on again!!
The biggest problem I have with most of these monster movies/creature features is the continued use of the same effect shots used over and over again. Two other films I can think of (Shark Attack 3 and Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus) which do what I’m talking about basically take the same shot of the animal or effect and use it more than once or twice during the movie. “Kaw” is guilty of doing this a lot, mainly with the major flocks of ravens flying at the camera and also the close up of the ravens, which is basically a raven sat in front of a green screen, and then the image changed to match the scene in the film. This pisses me off because it is lazy and it is as if the film makers are trying to make a bad film!!

So as a sum up, the film is really not that bad. The ravens are pretty scary and even more so in numbers, the actors are good and the setting is interesting for once. But the film is filled with holes, the same shots over and over again and the actors just seem to lose interest halfway through! So I would not “claw” (see what I did there) to see this film again, but I would not put people off watching it!

A Review of a so Called Bad Movie - Iron Sky

I have not reviewed a film in a while and after finally finishing “Iron Sky” I felt it was time. Ok where to start. This film does what it says on the tin, Nazi's fled to the moon, built a base, created an army and now it's time to invade the earth!! It starts with a space mission to the moon to advertise the election for the new American president, who uses a black astronaut, James Washington, to advertise the first moon mission in years, using the pun "Black to the moon". Soon after landing he discovers the secret Nazi moon base, getting caught and supplying the Nazi's with the power to fly their ships. After James has been bleached to look white, the only main female Nazi, takes a ship to Earth with James to find more smartphones to power their out dated technology. And then after the female Nazi manages to get into the white house and become the President’s speech writer the shit hits the fan!!

This film has two things going for it. The first being the fact it is so stupid that it seems to work, it is tongue in cheek and it happens to love taking the piss out of its self. The make up on James Washington when he is made to look white is so poor that it is funny, and made even funnier that the characters in the film look convinced that he is white. The actress playing the President is made to look like Sarah Palin and gives a pretty stereotypical performance of Palin, which seems to be a theme in this film, another example being the war room and all the stereotypes from different countries. Greed is also projected well in this film, wondering how far any of the characters, good or bad, would go to get what they wanted. I was impressed that the film started to have a dig at the way our countries are run and basically controlled by the United States, but did not go to far keeping the whole film on a more tongue-in-cheek level.

The second point I want to make about how good the film is, is simply the production design and how well it is pulled off. There is so much detail in this film, and it all looks amazing, from background posters to the massive moon base. The bright colours of Earth compared to the gloomy shades of the moon makes everything stand out and helps to highlight every detail, making it easier to spot little details. The thing I thought might let the film down was the CGI, but I was very impressed to learn that this was not the case. The different vehicles of war on both the Nazi's and the planet Earth's side, were designed brilliantly and were pulled off very well by the special effects department.

The fact that this film reminded me of a 60's Science Fiction film added to the wacky joy that this film created, just look at the costume the main American female captain is wearing in the final battle scene. When reading other reviews I do wonder what the other critics wanted from this film. It's about Nazi's on the Moon in the year 2018 (or something), you telling me that it was going to be ground breaking?? That is like comparing "Snakes on a Plane" to "Citizen Kane"!!

So to sum it up this film is just a colourful comic book of a film, good vs. evil, but how far will good go before coming evil itself?? Ok the acting was not perfect, but I did not think I was looking at an Oscar winning film. It's a bit of fun. What I would call a "Throw your brain at the wall" type of film, just forget about everything else for 90 minutes and enjoy a bit of silly fun!!

Everyone Loves A Musical!!

As we know everyone has gone a bit musical mad of late, since the release of Tom Hooper's Les Miserables, and since being a fan of the film myself I thought I would take 5 minutes and create a musical inspired blog. I have decided to pick my favorite 5 songs from musical films.
Well I have to start somewhere and why not with what happens to also be my favorite film of all time.

The Nightmare Before Christmas – Poor Jack

So every song in this film is brilliantly written (and in some cases even performed) by Danny Elfman. You may think that I would have chosen "What's This?", "This is Halloween" or the totally brilliant "Kidnap the Sandy Claws" but no I go for the song that has the most heart. After being blown out of the sky, Jack Skeleton sings of his disappointment in himself for not being able to pull off Christmas and as the song begins he sees what has happened as his own fault. As the song progresses and picks up pace the real Jack starts to shine through. He begins to see that he was only trying to help out, and as he rips the Christmas clothes off we can see that he is back to normal and ready to save the day!!

Singing in the Rain - Broadway Melody Ballet

"Singing in the Rain" maybe a bit of an obvious choice, but what can I say I like my classics. No, I'm not going for the title song, but the song that I think stands out the most. Compared to the other tracks of the film "Broadway Melody Ballet" is bigger, more colourful and feels like it over shadows everything else in the film. In my opinion that works because it breaks up the action before we go into the last act and shows that with a musical you can get away with nearly everything, including a period musical that has a modern day dancer travel back in time to the cavalier days. Grace Kelly launches into a song and dance number in a massive studio warehouse, including tap dancing and gangsters with stupid big coins that they seem to have trouble flipping!!

The Muppet Movie – Pictures in my Head

The Muppets have been around for a long time, and everyone knows they like a good song! It just so happens that in their newest adventure on the big screen, Bret McKenzie (One of the Flight of the Conchords) wrote some amazing songs for them to sing, including one which creates a great nostalgia for the Muppets of the 70's TV show. Yes I know Jason Segel's script was a love letter to the Muppets of yesteryear, but I think that is made so clear in this song. Well who does not want to get back with old friends??

South Park Movie - La Resistance

Since seeing Les Mis it is clear to see where Trey Parker and Matt Stone got influence for this song. Everyone loves a stirring anthem and with this tune bringing together the other songs from the film, I think it has an impact as much as “One Day More” does in Les Mis. Yes OK it may not be as serious as the issues are in Les Mis, but it is still as riveting and I remember as a 12 year old boy buying the album for the South Park Movie (as I was too young to see it), and listening to that song on repeat, shortly followed by “I’m Super”, not really sure why??!!

High School Musical 3 - Scream

OK, so this choice is something a little different for me, but well if you can't beat them, join them!! High School Musical may not be as popular as it was 5 years ago, but there is something I did and still do like about them. Troy (Zac Efron) has the best solo songs and even though his angry jumping around a golf course is simply brilliant, it is High School School 3 that had the best Troy Bolton song. "Scream" has a great little moral to it for the kids, but it is the fact that it has hundreds of badly CGI basketballs, a thunder storm and a revolving room which makes it so unmissable. Zac Efron tries his very best to show off his skills of anger and confusion but what is quite interesting is the little flairs he allows to escape. Like the ballet jumps on to the screen and my favorite by far is his manly head banging up a flight of stairs finished off by a girly little run up the last few steps!! O Troy you are such a man!!

BONUS TRACK, Shrek 2 – I Need a Hero

Ok, I know this is not really a musical, but I'm including this as a bonus track. Shrek 2 has a few musical numbers but the final track steals the show. As Shrek battles his way into the castle to save Fiona, the fairy godmother sings the track "I Need a Hero". The action to the song works so well and the comedy just tops it off!!

Monday Comic Book Review - Powers

At the minute I seem to have a thing for the comic book writer Brian Michael Bendis. I have just finished “Avengers: Dissemble” (review soonish) which made me realise he was one of three people to create my favourite line of Marvel comics, the “ultimate universe”. Plus most of the big titles I have coming through “The Ultimate Graphic Novel Collection” are written by him. It was a little bit of a surprise when I realised that “Powers”, a series I discovered through my favourite app Comixology, was also written by Bendis and that it is one of the best ideas I have read for a while. The only other time I have come across a story like this was the marvel story “Marvels”, a tale that follows the life of a photographer who lived through some of the greatest stories in the history of Marvel. “Powers” follows homicide detective Christian Walker and his newly appointed partner, Deena Pilgrim, as they solve crimes involving people with super powers.

The first story arc, “Who Killed Retro Girl?” follows the detectives coming together for the first time and the two of them trying to solve the mystery of Retro Girl’s death. From the word go the story is very welcoming and quick paced, but the panels are not minimal making each page full of great visuals. Not like some comics, “Powers” packs so much into the page allowing in some ways a lot more to happen. The art work by Michael Avon Oeming is very stunning on every page. The blocky and colourful images are so bold and stand up on the page making it very memorable; it is exciting to see action scenes and even just a conversation between 2 characters becomes even more potent through the images.

The story itself was not just entertaining but sometimes I did not want it to end or couldn’t see an ending coming, even though I had only one issue left to read. Both the main characters play off each other well and even though the way they meet and are asked to work together is very stereotypical it worked so well and felt pretty fresh. Added subplots as in the little girl Christian is told to look after and the fact that Christian is linked to the Superheroes in some way, create great depth to an already interesting main plot structure.

Overall I loved this comic and was glad to grab the first 2 (second still to read) story arcs cheap through Comixology, a website I would tell any new comic book fan to check out!!

Wednesday Film Review - The Toxic Avenger

So for my first Wednesday Bad Film Review I decided to start with a real classic. This film is one that I remember best from my childhood, not that I saw this film as a kid but I owned an annual of the Cartoon series that came from it. I talk of “The Toxic Avenger” a film created by the B movie studio Troma and the film which they use as their studio logo! To be honest I had not even seen the film till a couple of days ago and you know what, that was a real shame. Yes, it is a god awful but that is its charm. The only real problem with the film is the acting but again that is half of the joy, it creates most of the comedy and that is what makes it so watchable. The hammed up, cheesy characters make you want to know what they will do next, and breaking the characters up and giving them all an average time on screen allows none of them to become too annoying.

I loved what I took as comments on society, like comparing the police to Nazi Germany and hinting that psycho paths are Christians!! The homemade effort was also something that worked for the film and built on the character of the piece, my favorite part being the Mushy Pea nuclear waste, with other close competitors including the breathing dead dog and the montage of building the house in the swarm.

The special effects, I loved!! Maybe because it reminds me of the fun we have on “I am Tim” with the slow cost effects, but like “Tim” they still looked pretty impressive, like the head crushing weights and the transformation from Melvin to the Toxic Avenger.
True it made no sense why the policeman’s hands caught fire when touching Melvin, why the Toxic Avenger’s voice changed so much and the fact that at the end no one questioned if the Major was evil or not! Apart from that the story was reasonably solid and never became boring. I look forward to checking out the sequels and over Troma Films!

Acting 4/5

Cheesiness 4/5

Overall 4/5

Comic Book Monday - Captain America - The New Deal Review

When I started University, I did not really have an interest for the world of comic books. Yes I was a fan of comic book films, but I had never really explored the original source material. It was not till I met people at Uni and in my places of work that I started to read all types of comics. At the beginning of this year Marvel released a fortnightly graphic novel collection that features 60 of the comic book giants best work. As soon as I saw this I was interested and thought it was a great way to read a lot of the Marvel Universe. I have not been mistaken so far, as I have read some great tales, but have also struggled with some boring and uninteresting yarns. As a new comer to this world I thought I would share my thoughts on some of these books for other new comers and anyone who is interested in the colourful worlds of comics. I have decided to start with "The New Deal" a story involving Captain America.

Captain America is a soldier, a war hero and an icon of justice for America. So it makes total sense that you
would create a story arc around September 11th, but of course you would not have the Cap (big mates) breaking through the cave ceiling of Bin Laden’s hideout and beat the living crap out of him that is too obvious! But what happens in “The New Deal” is just a little lame, it is too picture heavy and there is not enough dialogue, and to be honest by the time I made it to the last chapter and the reveal of the big bad, I was bored and did not really care, so much I had already forgotten most the story and what the point was (and it was a quick read)!

The opening was good, seeing the Cap stand amongst the rubble of the fallen towers and trying to help find the people trapped is what you would expected from an American Icon. To then turn around to Nick Fury and tell him that being part of the rescue at ground zero is more important than the mission he is being told to leave New York for, makes you realise how much his home country means to him. It sums up the character in a nutshell and makes him a very powerful image for the United States. It’s a shame then that the rest of the book falls flat, giving none of the other characters any depth at all! Nick Fury just seems a bit of a bastard and like I said before I find it hard to recap on anyone else as they were so forgettable.

So to sum it up there are much better Captain America comics, like the "Winter Soldier", and maybe they should have just had the Cap find Bin Laden and beat the crap out of him, it would have been so much more entertaining!!

New Look, New Title, More Blogs

Welcome to the new look of Fan of Bad Movies!

While I still watch films that most people would not second glance at, I do a lot of other things too, and I have decided to widen the things I write on here. I have re-named the blog “Life of a Fan of Bad Movies” which will now focus on lots of different things including weekly reviews of Films, Graphic Novels and thoughts. So check back tomorrow for the first Graphic Novel post.
